Improvement of water quality for Ventura County Beaches leads to cleaner water for beach goers

(VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.)— March, 27 2019— Seven of Ventura County’s beaches were voted to be removed from the impaired water body list, also known as the 303(d) list by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (LA-RWQCB). The beaches, which consistently met water-quality objectives for indicator bacteria, have shown to have a significant improvement in water quality through results below the levels of concern for beach users’ health.

The beaches that were previously identified as being impaired for bacteria included Point Mugu, Ormond, Port Hueneme Beach Park, Peninsula, San Buenaventura, Surfer’s Point at Seaside, and Rincon Parkway.

Data from the weekly beach water quality testing performed by the Ventura County Environmental Health Department was used to show the improvement.  Monitoring of these beaches will continue to keep the public informed of beach water quality.

On the forefront of taking action to improve water quality is the Ventura Countywide Stormwater Quality Management Program, a coalition of the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, the County of Ventura, and the ten cities within Ventura County. Together, they have worked to build infrastructure and raise awareness of pollution.

Examples of their efforts to help reduce pollutants from entering the storm drain system range from physical solutions to prevent runoff from reaching the beach including diverting storm drain runoff to sanitary sewers or capturing and infiltrating runoff through green streets projects designed to slow, filter, and cleanse stormwater; and working with the public to prevent pollution at the source.

“Efforts by the public are a huge part of this success. Little things like picking up after pets, not littering, and watering only plants and not the gutter helped,” said Arne Anselm, Deputy Director of the Ventura County Watershed Protection District. “We are proud the State acknowledge these improvements and of our efforts and those by the people of Ventura County. The cities and County of Ventura are committed to improving water quality and protecting everyone who enjoy our beautiful Ventura County beaches.”

For more information about the Ventura Countywide Stormwater Quality Management Program please visit www.vcstormwater.org and Ventura County’s Community for A Clean Watershed www.cleanwatershed.org.

Recipe of the Week | Back To Our Root Vegetables

    0
Root Vegetables | Photo Credit Randolph Graham

Parsnips, rutabagas and the like are common fare in Norway. Although it may be a clumsy play on words, I call this the “back to our roots” recipe. Here’s why.

My grandfather’s “grandfather,” Amund Eidsmoe, came to America in 1852 from Norway settling in southeastern South Dakota. It was there that my grandfather (Gramps) was born and later met and married my grandmother (Gran). Living in a home that had a root cellar with carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, and potatoes was not uncommon in those days. Root cellars often made it possible to eat well during the harsh winter months. When Gran and Gramps moved to California during the Great Depression, Gran continued to cook from recipes that were passed down to her by my grandfather’s side of the family. In addition to making a wonderful carrot casserole for us each fall, Gran would make this inexpensive vegetable bake at the first hint of cold weather.

    Ingredients:

1 pound organic carrots (scrubbed and cut into ½ inch lengths)

1 pound new potatoes (quartered – scrub but no need to peel)

1 pound organic parsnips (peeled and cut into ½ inch lengths)

1 pound organic rutabaga (peeled and diced cut into ½ inch cubes)

2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

    1 ½ teaspoons salt

    ½ teaspoon pepper

1 1/3 cups cream (milk or half and half will not do!)

    1 1/3 cups Fontina cheese

    1 tablespoon parsley (chopped)

2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese

    1 tablespoon breadcrumbs

    Directions:

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Place prepared root vegetables in a large baking dish (we use a tall Corning Ware 2.8 liter dish). Drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat. Roast vegetables uncovered for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Transfer roasted vegetables to a large mixing bowl. Stir in cream, Fontina, and ½ of the parsley. Transfer vegetable mixture back to the baking dish. Sprinkle top with Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs and balance of the parsley. Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes or until bubbly. Serve hot.

    Notable New Developments in Camarillo

There’s quite a bit of new construction happening in Camarillo. In addition to residential developments, there are several commercial/industrial projects that are underway, or on the way, including:

Mian Plaza – grading will soon begin on the irregular- shaped, 12.5 acre site on Ventura Blvd, between the 101 Freeway and the Camarillo Promenade. When complet- ed, Mian Plaza (right) will feature two hotels, an Embassy Suites and Home-2-Suites (277 rooms total), a 17,500 sq. ft. conference center, as well as retailers and eateries. The hotels should open in early 2020, and the conference center by mid-year.

Cloud 9 – much needed hangar space is coming to Camarillo Airport throughout the year. The County of Ventura is building 41 new hangars near the northeast section of the Airport. In the same area, though closer to Las Posas Road, a project called Cloud 9 (below) will include four 25,000 sq. ft. jet hangars. The

$20 million Cloud 9 development will be built on about six acres, and will be an attractive addition to the Airport. The solar-

powered facility will include a number of modern features. Construction is expected to begin this fall, and planes should be occupying the hangars by the fall of 2020.

Other Hotels – for a number of years, a Holiday Inn Express  was located just off the 101 Freeway at Central Avenue; that hotel has been converted to a Fairfield Inn & Suites, which will open  later this year. The 103-room Fairfield Inn has gone through a num- ber of design changes, resulting in project delays. The relocated Holiday Inn Express is around the corner from the Fairfield Inn, on Del Norte Road. The Holiday Inn was also recently renovated. For

more information about commercial or residential development activity in Camarillo, please contact the Community Development Department at 388-5357.
