Multiple Defendants Plead Guilty in Separate Auto Insurance Fraud Cases

VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that multiple defendants pled guilty on March 14, 2019, in separate auto insurance fraud cases prosecuted by the Auto Insurance Fraud Unit of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

    • Raymond Merkley (DOB 10/22/78), of Woodland Hills, pled guilty to presenting a fraudulent auto insurance claim and admitted previously sustaining two prison priors. In November 2016, while illegally off-roading in Hungry Valley State Park, Merkley’s truck suffered significant damages. Afterwards, Merkley repeatedly lied to his insurance carrier about when and how the damages occurred. Merkley will be sentenced on May 29, 2019, in the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura. Due to his prior convictions for which he served prison time, Merkley faces up to 10 years in custody in this case.
    • Manuel Abrego (DOB 3/1/87), of Thousand Oaks, and Felix Hernandez (DOB 10/16/78), of Oxnard, pled guilty to arson and auto insurance fraud. On March 2, 2017, firefighters from the Oxnard Fire Department were called to a suspicious car fire. It was later determined that the car belonged to Abrego and that he previously paid Hernandez to burn the car to obtain insurance money. Abrego and Hernandez will be sentenced on April 25, 2019, in the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura. Both men face up to 5 years 8 months in prison for their respective roles in the fraudulent scheme. At the time of the plea, Abrego paid full restitution of $14,846 to State Farm Insurance, $1,193 to the Oxnard Fire Department, and $660 to Toyota Motor Corporation.
    • Kellina Pelletier (DOB 3/7/78), of Ventura, pled guilty to two counts of auto insurance fraud stemming from an Easter-day car accident on April 16, 2017. Pelletier will be sentenced on April 25, 2019, in the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura.  At the time of her plea, Pelletier paid $769 in full restitution to AAA Insurance.

Vermont Town Swears In Mayor, Lincoln The Goat.

Photo of Katie JerkovichKATIE JERKOVICH, Entertainment Reporter

The small town of Fair Haven, Vermont, swore in a 3-year-old goat as their honorary mayor, and right after the big ceremony on her first day in office, she pooped on the floor.

Lincoln, dressed in a black sash that read “Mayor,” was sworn into office Tuesday at the Fair Haven town offices by Town Clerk Suzanne Dechame and other board members and delivered the oath of office, per NBC Washington on Thursday. (RELATED: Poem About Turkish President Sexing Goat Takes Top Prize)

But Lincoln is a goat. How will she sign the necessary paperwork and put a stamp on documents making the whole thing official? Dechame planned ahead and had an ink pad for the mayor-elect to step on, which she reluctantly did, before making her “signature” stomp on the paperwork, per the Burlington Free Press.

And after all the fanfare and minutes into office, the goat pooped on the floor for police chief Bill Humphries and other attendees to clean up. (Not unlike other politicians, so to speak.) (RELATED: Total Fail: Oregon Town Rents 75 Goats To Clear Invasive Species)

“Note the crap,” joked Mark Gutel, a local coffee shop owner. “It’s just like any other meeting.”

Fair Haven is a town with a population of 2,500 and actually doesn’t have a mayor. The idea of having a pet for a mayor started a while back as a fundraiser for a school playground for the kids, Town Manager Joseph Gunter shared.

Gunter said the kids gave $5 and were able to nominate their animal of choice, which included a dozen dogs, cats and of course a goat. And after the election, Lincoln won the race with 13 votes.

With the whole pooping on the floor the first day, one municipal employee joked that “it’s been baaaaad so far.”

Angel City Brewery Launches Sunbather Sour Session Ale Throughout Southern California

After a successful draft launch this past winter, Angel City Brewery’s Sunbather Sour Session Ale is now available in cans starting this month, showing off new label design by Studio Number OneSunbather will be offered year-round throughout Southern California in 6-packs in-store, as well as select bars and restaurants.

The DTLA-based brewery is no stranger to sours. Angel City has been brewing award-winning sours, like Batch 1500 and Strawberry Gose, for the last several years, even hosting Sour to the People Festival this past January to celebrate their extensive sour list. Sunbather is meant to serve as a sour ale for more sessionable occasions. To do this, the team experimented with a single-hop sour taproom-exclusive series, playing with different flavor profiles – including versions with Mosaic, Amarillo and Citra hops. The new cans are the latter version, Citra, which makes for a juicy, tart pale ale that finishes crisp and refreshing.

Sunbather uses a specific but relatively new brewing process known as kettle-souring. The brew team sours the wort (aka pre-beer) in the kettle before fermentation for a 72-hours process that delivers a balanced flavor profile. This creates a tart, but crisp session ale at 4.2% ABV. Sunbather is a versatile and low-calorie beer made not only for sour connoisseurs to enjoy, but for all beer lovers.

“Sunbather was inspired by the culture of SoCal summers,” said Angel City Brewery Head Brewer Layton Cutler. “We’ve had a blast experimenting with sours over the years, with different hop varieties, and we’re thrilled to see how much excitement has grown in the industry. We’re very pleased to get this version out in the world for fans to enjoy while soaking in the sun.”

    Sunbather Session Sour Ale:

    Availability: Limited 12oz Can, Draft

    Ingredients & Stats:

    Malt: 2-Row, wheat

    Hops:  Citra

    ABV: 4.2%

    IBU:  16

Description: Soak in the sour. Imbibe in the hops. Drink in the sun! Introducing Sunbather, a session sour ale dry hopped with Citra hops. The result is refreshingly tart and juicy. It’s the perfect beer to enjoy while soaking up that California sun.

In celebration of the launch, Angel City Brewery will be hosting the Sunbather Summer festival, on April 28, from 12pm-6pm. The event will be a full-on celebration of the Sunbather Session Sour Ale and the unofficial start of summer. It will also kick-off a three-part series of live music curated by Jam in the Vanthe solar-powered mobile record studio that doubles as transit to pop-up shows at various venues and festivals, in addition to their popular YouTube Channel. The party will also feature local nosh and a chance to try out the brewery’s newly appointed beer garden, to, you guessed it: drink in the sun.
