Mt Pinos | Lost Skier Located

On 03/13/19, at about 1:40 PM, the Lockwood Valley Sheriff’s Station received a call from 63 year old Goleta resident, Jeffrey Everhard who stated he had been cross-country skiing on Mount Pinos and was now lost. The Mount Pinos summit, 8,847’ above sea level, is located in northern Ventura County bordering Kern County.

Everhard reported his only provisions were one 8 ounce can of water and a box of raisins. Everhard said he had reached the Mount Pinos summit and then traveled east.  Everhard realized he had traveled south while he intended to go east and was unsure of his location. Everhard did not have a cellphone capable of providing his GPS location and did not have a GPS device with him. Everhard also stated his cellphone was not activated and was only working because he had dialed 911.

A deputy from the Lockwood Valley Sheriff’s Station spoke with Everhard before responding to his location and instructed Everhard to retrace the path from which he had come from if he was able. Everhard was instructed to stop and shelter in place if he lost his previous tracks at any time.

The deputy responded to the Mount Pinos trailhead and began the two mile one way trek to the summit using snow shoes due to the amount of snow. The temperature was 31° at the trailhead with gusty winds. As the deputy approached the summit, he received a telephone call from Everhard stating he had retraced his tracks to within about 200 yards from the repeater towers at the summit. The deputy searched a large area around the summit for about thirty minutes before spotting Everhard about 1000 yards to the southeast of the repeater towers near the summit.

Everhard was located and reported he was feeling dehydrated and lacked energy from improper nutrition. Everhard was provided water and food before the deputy guided him to the trailhead. Everhard was guided back to the trailhead without incident.

At 63 years old, Everhard stated he had 50 years of outdoor experience including all-season mountaineering, ski guide, and as an outdoor instructor. Everhard said that if he had not called 911 when he did he would have continued in the wrong direction and “would have been in a world of hurt.” Everhard had not thought to retrace his tracks and believed he would have been lost on the icy hillside overnight if he had not “humbled” himself and called 911. Everhard had not told anyone where he was going to be skiing and admitted he was lucky to have been able to make a call.

Everhard wanted to ensure others could learn from his mistakes even as an experienced cross- country skier and outdoorsman. It is imperative that those recreating in the outdoors prepare by telling someone where they are going to be and when they are expected to return. Additionally, having the proper provisions, clothing/equipment, and navigational tools such as maps, compass, and GPS are essential to ensure your recreational activities are done safely and responsibly.

The Lockwood Valley Sheriff’s Station commends Everhard for his resilience and determination to be located.

71 Year Old Resident Interrupts Burglary of her Oak View Home

Ventura County Sheriff Department – Incident Press Release

    James Hanna

Oak View resident interrupts burglary of her residence and assists with identification of suspect, which led to his arrest.

On 03/06/19, at about 12:30 PM, a 71-year-old victim returned home from her day’s activities to find unknown an intruder, later identified as 23 year old Oak View resident James Hanna, had ransacked her residence, and was still inside her bedroom rummaging through her personal belongings.  After announcing to Hanna that she had a gun, Hanna decided it was time to leave and ran out the garage door. The victim saw Hanna was carrying two duffle bags full of what she believed to be her personal items, as he fled towards his car parked in front of her residence. The victim decided she wasn’t going to just stand by and allow Hanna to make off with her property, so she chased after him.

The victim grabbed hold of the duffle bag full of her belongings, at which time Hanna pushed her to the ground. The victim laid on the ground and yelled aloud the letters listed on Hanna’s vehicle license plate, “L.U.C., L.U.C., I got your plate! You’re going to jail!”

As the Deputies began their investigation, they contacted Ojai Detectives who were already out in the field on an unrelated matter. Thanks to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office keeping up on the most recent technology, the Detectives were able to immediately go to work on the partial license plate of “L.U.C.” provided by Kenton and identified their suspect as “James Hanna,” who lived nearby and was on parole for grand theft.

    Clean Power Alliance Begins Launch for Commercial Customers in 28 Communities;

    3

Los Angeles, CA–Clean Power Alliance, Southern California’s new locally-operated clean energy provider will be enrolling commercial customers across 28 additional communities (27 cities and unincorporated Ventura County) in May 2019. Business customers in these areas will receive clean energy purchased by Clean Power Alliance that has higher renewable content and is competitively-priced with Southern California Edison (SCE). SCE will continue to deliver power, send utility bills, and be responsible for resolving any electricity service issues.

Each participating City or County’s elected officials voted to join Clean Power Alliance and chose a default rate tier from one of CPA’s three rate tiers. These tiers include: 36% Lean Power (a 1-2% bill savings), 50% Clean Power (at parity with SCE rates), and 100% Green Power (a 7-9% bill premium).

This phase of Clean Power Alliance’s service launch will serve business, industrial, and agricultural customers. Per California law, enrollment into Clean Power Alliance will be automatic and customers will receive four informational notices from Clean Power Alliance in the mail. Two notices are sent before Clean Power Alliance service starts in May 2019 and two are sent afterwards, advising businesses of their choices and their community’s chosen default rate option.

Individual commercial customers will be able to opt up, down, or out (and return to SCE) at any time once they receive a pre-enrollment notice in the mail through Clean Power Alliance’s website or customer service call center: www.cleanpoweralliance.org or 888-585-3788.

This phase of commercial enrollment follows the enrollment in February 2019 of over 900,000 residential customers from all of Clean Power Alliance’s 31 communities. Clean Power Alliance’s previous enrollment included over 30,000 businesses in unincorporated Los Angeles County and the Cities of Rolling Hills Estates and South Pasadena in 2018. To date, over 97% of eligible Clean Power Alliance customers have chosen to remain with Clean Power Alliance.

“Clean Power Alliance offers more choice and competitively priced clean energy to our commercial customers, many of whom have their own sustainability targets,” said Ted Bardacke, Executive Director, Clean Power Alliance. “We’re excited to bring competition to the electricity market in a way that will foster innovation and allow us to meet the state’s climate goals ahead of schedule with customer needs in mind.”

Commercial customers who remain with Clean Power Alliance will have the opportunity to help design new local programs for the business community as well as remain eligible for the ones offered by SCE. Customers who choose the 100% Green Power plan will also receive special recognition and marketing opportunities though Clean Power Alliance’s forthcoming green business recognition program. Commercial customers with solar who generate excess energy will also be able to take advantage of Net Surplus Compensation rates that are 10% higher than SCE’s Net Surplus Compensation rates under Clean Power Alliance’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) Program.

“Part of our vision of regional emission reduction means serving our local larger commercial customers with tailored programming, such as special recognition of our business leaders who have stepped up and committed to 100% Green Power,” said Diana Mahmud, Councilwoman of South Pasadena and Board Chair, Clean Power Alliance. “As local elected officials, we’re excited to offer a range of energy products that offer greater greenhouse gas emission reductions at competitive rates.”

Clean Power Alliance believes in a clean energy future that is local, where communities are empowered, and customers are given a choice about the source of their energy. REBUKED: Senate Republicans Turn On Trump Over National Emergency

    0

Saagar Enjeti | White House Correspondent

Twelve Republican senators voted Thursday to rebuke President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border in a major embarrassment to the White House.

The senators joined their Democratic colleagues in passing a resolution, which notes official congressional disapproval of Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. The national emergency declaration is paired with a number of executive actions designed to make approximately $8 billion of funding available to begin construction on a wall along the southern border.

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1106279613431508992?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1106279613431508992&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F03%2F14%2Fsenate-republicans-vote-against-trump-national-emergency%2F

The senators’ main concern centered on the idea that Trump is circumventing Congress’s enumerated power of the purse to appropriate funds and use them as he pleases. Nearly all have noted that future Democratic presidents would exploit Trump’s action and declare their own national emergencies to fulfill campaign promises. (RELATED: 3 Senate Republicans Are Banding Together To Support Resolution To Terminate Trump’s National Emergency)

They included Sens. Marco Rubio, Rob Portman, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Pat Toomey, Roy Blunt, Lamar Alexander, Mitt Romney, Rand Paul, Jerry Moran, Mike Lee, and Roger Wicker.

Forty-one Republican senators stood by the Trump administration, including Sen. Thom Tillis, who previously had declared in a Washington Post op-ed that he could not support Trump on the declaration of a national emergency.

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1106144173458161664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1106144173458161664&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F03%2F14%2Fsenate-republicans-vote-against-trump-national-emergency%2F

Some Senate Republicans and White House aides sought to stop the embarrassing defeat by attempting to create an alternative resolution that would restrict the president’s future use of executive power. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly shot down the resolution, however, and Trump himself did not appear to endorse it Wednesday.

Tlaib Supports College’s Attempt To End School’s Study Abroad Program In Israel

    0

    By Mike Brest | Reporter

Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib is supporting a college movement to suspend the school’s study abroad program in Israel.

Students and professors at Pitzer College in California are pushing the school’s administration to halt the program in Haifa, Israel until the Middle Eastern country meets demands set by the organizers.

Daniel Segal, a professor at Pitzer College, tweeted a photo of Tlaib posing with a #SuspendPitzerHaifa pamphlet earlier this week. He brought the initial motion to end the program back in November, according to student-run newspaper The Student Life.

The motion reads, “The Pitzer Faculty calls for the suspension of the College’s exchange with Haifa University, until (a) the Israeli state ends its restrictions on entry to Israel based on ancestry and/or political speech and (b) the Israeli state adopts policies granting visas for exchanges to Palestinian universities on a fully equal basis as it does to Israeli universities.”

A vote scheduled for Thursday by both students and faculty will determine whether or not the resolution will go to the Board of Trustees and Pitzer College President Melvin Oliver. If the vote passes, it will be up to them to make a final decision on the Haifa abroad program.

Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman elected to Congress, has made headlines with comments she’s made about the Israel-Palestine conflict. She was one of the first members of Congress to publicly state her support for the boycott, divestment and sanction (BDS) movement.

Some view the BDS movement as anti-Semitic because it seeks to penalize Israel for their treatment of Palestinians, though it does not seek to do so for any nation other than the Jewish state.

Pitzer College President Melvin Oliver pointed out the double standard that some perceive in the movement, saying, “Why would we not suspend our program with China? Or take our longest standing program in Nepal where the Pitzer in Nepal program has been run for over 40 years, During that time, they have had a bloody civil war that killed 19,000 people. Why Israel?” according to The Student Life.

Neither Segal or Oliver responded to request for comment.

Grandmother Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Conceal Evidence of Granddaughter’s Death

VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Maria De Jesus Lopez (DOB 2/13/74), of Oxnard, pled guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to destroy and conceal evidence. Lopez conspired with her daughter, Mayra Alejandra Chavez (DOB 10/4/91), and Omar Misael Lopez (DOB 2/5/85), to conceal the death of Lopez’s 3-year-old granddaughter, Kimberly Lopez, from authorities.

Kimberly’s death was the result of child abuse inflicted on her by her mother Mayra Chavez in June 2015. Upon learning of Kimberly’s death, Lopez assisted Chavez and Omar Lopez in covering up Kimberly’s death by lending the couple her car and providing them money so they could transport and ultimately destroy Kimberly’s remains in Tijuana, Mexico. Kimberly’s body was never recovered. Over the next 15 months, Lopez also assisted Chavez and Omar Lopez in concealing Kimberly’s death from authorities. Chavez was convicted of Kimberly’s murder in December 2018. Omar Lopez had earlier pled guilty to felony child endangerment in exchange for truthful testimony in Chavez’s trial.

Sentencing for Lopez is scheduled April 23, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 12 of the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura. Lopez faces a maximum possible sentence of 180 days in the Ventura County jail and three years of formal probation. Lopez is currently out of custody on $200,000 bail.

District Attorney Greg Totten Deeply Disappointed by Death Penalty Moratorium

    0

VENTURA, California –District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that he is “deeply disappointed by Governor Newsom’s decision to impose a moratorium on imposition of the death penalty in California. In doing so, the Governor is substituting his opinion in place of literally thousands of jurors who, after hearing the facts of these cases, decided that death was the only truly just punishment for the horrific crimes committed by these defendants.”

District Attorney Greg Totten stated, “The Governor’s actions disregard the will of Californians, who voted three times in the last six years to retain and implement the death penalty.” Propositions 34 and 62 both sought to repeal the death penalty and were defeated in 2012 and 2016. Proposition 66 passed in 2016, which sought to provide additional resources to streamline the overly lengthy appeals process.

Lastly, the Governor’s moratorium, implemented without consultations with elected District Attorneys across the state, deprives the deceased victims and their families of justice, in favor of those who have murdered children, police officers, and other innocent victims.
