SpaceX Crew Dragon Splashdown Marks Success of First NASA Commercial Crew Flight Test

NASA passed a major milestone Friday in its goal to restore America’s human spaceflight capability when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon returned to Earth after a five-day mission docked to the International Space Station.

About 6 hours after departing the space station, Crew Dragon splashed down at 8:45 a.m. EST approximately 230 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. SpaceX retrieved the spacecraft from the Atlantic Ocean and is transporting it back to port on the company’s recovery ship.

“Today’s successful re-entry and recovery of the Crew Dragon capsule after its first mission to the International Space Station marked another important milestone in the future of human spaceflight,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “I want to once again congratulate the NASA and SpaceX teams on an incredible week. Our Commercial Crew Program is one step closer to launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil. I am proud of the great work that has been done to get us to this point.”

Demonstration Mission-1 (Demo-1) was an uncrewed flight test designed to demonstrate a new commercial capability developed under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The mission began March 2, when the Crew Dragon launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and racked up a number of “firsts” in less than a week.

    • First commercially-built and operated American crew spacecraft and rocket to launch from American soil on a mission to the space station.
    • First commercially-built and operated American crew spacecraft to dock with the space station.
    • First autonomous docking of a U.S. spacecraft to the International Space Station.
    • First use of a new, global design standard for the adapters that connect the space station and Crew Dragon, and also will be used for the Orion spacecraft for NASA’s future mission to the Moon.

NASA and SpaceX teams gathered in the early morning hours at the company’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California, to follow the spacecraft’s return journey and ocean splashdown.

“We were all very excited to see re-entry, parachute and drogue deploy, main deploy, splashdown – everything happened just perfectly. It was right on time, the way that we expected it to be. It was beautiful,” said Benji Reed, director of crew mission management at SpaceX.

A critical step in validating the performance of SpaceX’s systems, Demo-1 brings the nation a significant step closer to the return of human launches to the space station from U.S soil for the first time since 2011, when NASA flew its last space shuttle mission. However, NASA and SpaceX still have work to do to validate the spacecraft’s performance and prepare it to fly astronauts.

“If you just think about the enormity of this flight and all of the prep that went into it – getting the pad refurbished, getting the flight control room set up, getting the vehicle built, getting the Falcon 9 ready, all of the analysis and mission support that went into it – it’s just been a tremendous job. Our NASA and SpaceX teams worked seamlessly not only in the lead-up to the flight but in how we managed the flight,” said Steve Stich, deputy manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

Crew Dragon carried a passenger on this flight test – a lifelike test device named Ripley, which was outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on humans traveling in the spacecraft. After SpaceX processes data from this mission, teams will begin refurbishing Crew Dragon for its next mission, an in-flight abort test targeted to take place this summer. Demo-2, the first crewed test flight, will carry NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on the spacecraft’s final flight to certify Crew Dragon for routine operational missions.

“For the first time, we’ve gotten to see an end-to-end test, and so now we’ve brought together the people, the hardware and all the processes and procedures, and we’ve gotten to see how they all work together, and that’s very important as we move toward putting people onboard,” said NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins, who will crew SpaceX’s first operational mission to the space station following Demo-2. “I’m, personally, very anxious to hear how Ripley is feeling after they pull her out of the capsule and get her onto the recovery vehicle.”

Completing an end-to-end uncrewed flight test, Demo-1, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon departed the International Space Station at 2:32 a.m. EST Friday, March 8, 2019, and splashed down at 8:45 a.m. in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 nautical miles off the Florida coast.

Thousand Oaks | “Start Smart” Driving Program April 2nd

The Thousand Oaks Police Department will be hosting a program to educate newly licensed and future licensed drivers on April 2nd at the Thousand Oaks Police Station Community Room.  The “Start Smart” Driving Program is a cooperative effort between the California Highway Patrol, Thousand Oaks Police Department, teenage drivers, and their parents.

Nationwide, 43 percent of first-year drivers and 37 percent of second-year drivers are involved in car crashes.  The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16-19-year-olds than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.

In an attempt to remain proactive and not reactive, the Start Smart Program is designed to help young drivers and their parents/guardians understand the responsibilities associated with driving a motor vehicle. Start Smart will show how a poor choice behind the wheel can change the lives of everyone involved. Our goal is to raise awareness and reduce the number of teen-related injuries and deaths due to collisions.

To make a reservation, interested parents are asked to call the Thousand Oaks Police Department Traffic Bureau at (805) 494-8271.  Space is limited to 25 students and their parents.  There is no charge to attend the program.

OPINION: Dems Have Passed HR 1 — And It Could Make Life A Lot Harder For AOC

Eric Wang | Institute for Free Speech

Democrats in the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1 on a party-line vote on Friday morning. Their signature legislation purports to “shine a light on dark money in politics” and to “enhance [the] enforcement mechanisms” of the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Ironically, campaign finance controversies surrounding Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic freshmen class superstar, illustrate the bill’s severe flaws.

First, there is H.R. 1’s “DISCLOSE Act” provision, which would force civic groups to file burdensome and often duplicative reports with the FEC for issuing public communications that purportedly “promote,” “attack,” “support,” or “oppose” candidates or elected officials. Public campaigns opposing Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” or Bernie Sanders’ “Medicare for All” likely would trigger reporting.

The FEC reports would have to publicly identify groups’ donors, including their names and addresses. The effect, if not the intent, of this infringement on donor privacy will be to deter financial support to groups that dare to speak on such issues.

“Doxxing” — posting individuals’ personal information online in retaliation against their political activities — has become increasingly common in today’s polarized society. The aim is to encourage harassment and threats against the victims. H.R. 1 amounts to government facilitation of doxxing against private citizens exercising their core First Amendment rights.

H.R. 1 justifies this invasion of privacy in the name of countering so-called “dark money” — that is, independent groups speaking about government that are not required to publicly identify their donors. Which brings us to Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign finance issues. During a committee hearing on H.R. 1, Ocasio-Cortez curiously referred to “my special interest dark money-funded campaign.”

At the time, this appeared to be a hypothetical but ignorant argument for H.R. 1’s disclosure requirements. In hindsight, it may have been a Freudian slip.

Politicians like Ocasio-Cortez have been prohibited from running “dark money-funded campaigns” for the past 40-plus years. They must disclose all of their spending and contributions. Private organizations are not required to do so. This distinction exists because elected officials and candidates wield (or have the potential to wield) the enormous powers of government. Private organizations, no matter how powerful, merely have the power to petition and persuade government. Therefore, politicians must disclose their campaign finances to help deter and monitor against quid pro quo transactions. In short, disclosure requirements apply to politicians — not, as H.R. 1 would have it, to the people.

But it has come to light recently that Ocasio-Cortez and a top campaign aide (now her chief of staff) controlled the Justice Democrats PAC during her campaign that separately raised millions of dollars. Only about 2.5 percent of that money was reported as having been spent on direct support for candidates. Much of that money went to a consulting firm the campaign aide owned and ran. An FEC complaint has been filed alleging the firm impermissibly obscured much of the PAC’s spending. Perhaps Ocasio-Cortez’s “dark-money funded campaign” wasn’t hypothetical after all.

Another FEC complaint alleges the consulting firm was used to pay Ocasio-Cortez’s boyfriend in violation of rules against “personal use” of campaign funds. Other questionshave been raised over whether Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign aide’s control over the Justice Democrats PAC was illegal in and of itself, and which could prompt yet a third FEC complaint.

This brings us to another one of H.R. 1’s many dangerous provisions: politicization of the FEC and weakening of due process. H.R. 1 would restructure the current six-member bipartisan agency into a five-member agency susceptible to partisan control. The agency’s chairperson and general counsel also would have more power to launch investigations unilaterally. This would invite the type of political abuses at the IRS overseen by Lois Lerner (who previously was the FEC’s enforcement chief).

Imagine if a Trump-appointed FEC chairperson were to unilaterally order an investigation into the allegations against Ocasio-Cortez. That’s not possible today, but H.R. 1 would permit a future chairperson to do just that. And even if it ultimately turns out Ocasio-Cortez has good defenses, the impartiality of a partisan-controlled FEC in fairly resolving the charges against her would be highly suspect.

H.R. 1 is the proverbial solution in search of a problem. Its disclosure requirements erroneously target private groups when the real “dark money” concern always has been over candidates and elected officials. Its attempt to “fix” the FEC would instead lead to suspicions about whether “the fix is in” for those who must answer to the agency’s enforcement powers.Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign finance controversies ironically demonstrate why H.R. 1 is so misguided.

California Governor Declares There’s No ‘National Emergency’ In Border Town With A Wall

    0

    Jason Hopkins | Energy Investigator

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a major critic of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, visited a border town with a wall and declared there was no “national emergency.”

    WATCH:

“[We are trying] to highlight a different story as it relates to what’s going on here between Mexico and the United States, and the economic vibrancy that is demonstrable here at the border,” Newsom said Thursday as he visited San Ysidro, a district in San Diego, California.

Newsom on Thursday hosted a roundtable discussion with local residents to talk about Trump’s national emergency declaration and what life is like on the U.S. southern border. The press conference was largely meant to push back against the president’s narrative that unfettered illegal immigration leads to crime and lawlessness. Participants of the conference spoke on camera about how the town is actually quite safe.

“They’ve had the mentality that it’s dangerous,” said local resident Edgar Alaniz, referring to Americans who believe the border town to be unsafe. “I live here. I come down here everyday and I can tell you that it isn’t.”

However, critics of Newsom’s press conference were quick to point out one glaring detail about San Ysidro: it has a border wall.

“We remind Gov. Newsom that San Diego had a border crisis decades ago and built a border barrier which no sane person today is arguing should be torn down,”stated Tony Krvaric, the chairman of the San Diego County Republican Party. “We challenge the governor to make his arguments to the faces of angel families and those whose children have been trafficked or hooked on drugs due to the criminal gangs which use our border for their evil deeds.” (RELATED: 2019 on track to experience highest level of illegal immigration in a decade)

When the president extolls the benefits of border walls, he brings up the San Diego’s success in deterring illegal immigration after building a wall.

“It was really, really bad,” Trump said when he visited the city in 2018, speaking alongside U.S. Border Patrol agents. “They reestablished law and order in San Diego when they put up a wall. And it’s not a superior wall; it’s an inferior wall. But it’s a wall.”

Around 40 percent of all illegal border crossings in the Southwest took place near San Diego in the 1980s. However, the communities of San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and Imperial Beach saw a 75 percent drop in crossings in the years immediately following fencing installation in the 1990s. Border officials have since beefed up the walls with steel bollards and military landing mats, making the San Diego border one of the most fortified in the country.

    Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s Happy Ending

    0

    By Wayne Allyn Root

    new header

I believe in happy endings. Do you?

The biggest political story in America today is AOC (Alexandria Ocasio Cortez). And I know how to produce a happy ending- at least for President Trump, the GOP and capitalism. I believe I can end AOC’s political career, as quickly as it began.

For all intents and purposes, AOC is now the face and brand name of socialism. That means if we end AOC, we can end America’s dangerous flirtation with socialism.

Democrats love to ask for the tax returns of high profile Republicans. Think Trump. Democrats demand his tax returns all day long. It’s all they think about.

Think Harry Reid. He singlehandedly destroyed Mitt Romney’s presidential chances by lying about Mitt’s taxes. Harry claimed a close associate of Mitt told him Mitt never paid taxes for a decade. Harry lied. There was no “associate of Mitt.” No matter, Mitt never recovered. Harry bragged about it years later. He was asked did you lie about Mitt’s taxes? Harry replied, “It worked, didn’t it?”

Terrible. But two can play at that game. The difference is I don’t lie, or slander, or commit fraud like Harry. I just have great gut instincts and ask commonsense questions.

So, let’s turn the tables on the Democrats. It’s time to “Harry Reid” AOC.

Socialism is based on taxes- lots of them. AOC’s plans all revolve around loads of new taxes. She loves taxes the way that I love America, apple pie and football. AOC’s life is taxes, taxes and more taxes. At Christmas, she decorates her tree with IRS forms. At night she dreams of fairies, sugar plums and higher taxes.

But what if the gal whose middle name is taxes, who has built her brand around taxes, didn’t actually pay them herself? What if it became known that she wants 70% tax rates for you and me, but she’s a tax cheat?

Well that would be the end of “Ms. Socialist Taxes.” The political career of AOC would lay in smoldering ruins. She’d soon be back pounding the streets of the Bronx looking for bartending openings.

Even liberals would run away from her like the plague. Because no one wants the stench of a hypocrite near them. AOC’s tax cheating would destroy the entire argument of the Democrat Party that “the rich don’t pay enough.” They pay plenty compared to a tax cheat hypocrite.

So, let’s take a page from Harry Reid’s playbook and find out. You see I have an educated hunch. AOC was a bartender until recently. She went from bartender to Congresswoman. Bartenders live on tips. They get a small salary- usually minimum wage. And 80% of their wages come from tips.

Did “Ms. Socialist Taxes” pay taxes on her tips? Did she even bother to report her tips? Inquiring minds want to know. It’s easy enough to find out. It’ll all be in black and white on her tax returns. What years was she a bartender? Are there tips listed on those tax returns?

I’m betting the answer is NO.

We don’t have to go back 30 or 40 years like Democrats want to do with President Trump’s taxes. Or a decade as Harry Reid wanted to do with Mitt Romney’s taxes. AOC was a bartender only a year or two ago.

So, Here’s “the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tax Challenge.” It’s simple. We demand to see your tax returns. We want to see if you reported your “tips” and if you paid taxes on them. Afterall, you say you want everyone to pay their “fair share.”

So, did you pay? Or are you a tax cheat? Inquiring minds want to know.

I’m betting on a happy ending.
