Alamo Mountain Rescue of Five People Stuck in Deep Snow

On Sunday 03/03/19, at about 8 PM, Lockwood Valley Deputies responded to the area of Alamo Mountain in the Los Padres National Forest (LPNF) reference five subjects who were reportedly stuck in the snow in a Jeep on forest road 8N01.3.

The stranded party of five luckily had cellular telephone service which enabled them to communicate with the deputies and determine their location through GPS coordinates. The GPS coordinates showed the group was on 8N01.3 above Gold Hill Road at an elevation of about 7,000’. The group admitted they illegally entered the forest by circumventing two separate locked United States Forest Service (USFS) gates and had two Jeep’s stuck in about three feet of snow.

Based on several rescues in the Alamo Mountain area this winter and the report that the subjects were stuck in three feet of snow, the Fillmore Search and Rescue (SAR) Team was activated.

The Fillmore SAR team is comprised of a highly skilled and dedicated group of volunteers whose motto is “So that others may live.” The SAR team responded to Alamo Mountain with a Sno-Cat capable of safely and quickly driving over deep snow and steep terrain.

The Lockwood Deputies continued their response toward the stranded party. The deputies drove their 4×4 vehicles as far up the mountain as they could before the snow became too deep and the pitch of the hill too steep. At this point, the deputies were within one mile of the party and

opted to hike to the group. At about 11:40 PM, the deputies located the group who were sheltered together in one of the Jeeps. The deputies led the group down the road and to the awaiting Sheriff’s vehicles. The group was reunited with family in Gorman.

Due to the group’s willful entry into a closed portion of the LPNF, their information was sent to USFS Law Enforcement who will investigate their actions which may result in legal consequences.

There are numerous off highway vehicle (OHV) trails on the LPNF which are open year round. The LPNF uses steel gates to close specific trails such as those leading to Alamo Mountain due to the safety hazards associated with the difficult terrain. Information pertaining to OHV trails and recreating in the national forest can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lpnf/alerts- notices/?cid=stelprdb5307967

Mountain Lion Sighting in East Ventura

There was a residential report of mountain lion sighting at approximately 7:00 am today in the hillside area of East Ventura in the Clearpoint Neighborhood, North of La Cuesta Court and Westridge Drive.

This alert is for information only and has been issued as a precaution to our community. Mountain lion attacks are very rare but the Ventura Police Department would like to remind residents of a few simple tips to protect you and your loved ones from mountain lions:

Do not feed deer. It is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
Avoid hiking or jogging in hillside areas when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, or at night.
Keep a close watch on small children when hiking.
If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
Bring in small pets during the evening and early morning hours.
Ventura’s hills are a natural mountain lion habitat. Their primary prey is deer, but they have also been known to attack livestock and pets, and on very rare occasions, humans. Mountain lions are generally solitary, elusive and avoid human contact.

Trump’s Interior Department To Scrap Federal Protections On The Gray Wolf

    0

The Department of the Interior (DOI) is expected to propose rolling back federal protections on gray wolf populations in the contiguous United States in the coming days, The Associated Press reports.

Acting Interior Secretary David Bernhardt broke the news Wednesday in a speech at a wildlife and natural resources conference in Denver, Colorado. (RELATED: REPORT: Feds Are Wasting Billions Protecting ‘Endangered’ Animals That Are Just Fine)

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will soon propose a rule to delist the gray wolf in the lower 48 states and return management of the species back to the states and tribes,” a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) spokesperson told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.

“Recovery of the gray wolf under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a one of our nation’s great conservation successes, with the wolf joining other cherished species, such as the bald eagle, that have been brought back from the brink with the help of the ESA,” the FWS said.

The agency has attempted to delist the gray wolf since 2003 after the animal’s recovery passed the threshold to be considered endangered. Environmental and conservation groups have torpedoed motions to delist the wolf with lawsuits that courts use to block proposed rules.

The federal government placed the gray wolf on the Endangered Species List in 1975 when 1,000 of the animals roamed the U.S. That number has since risen to over 5,000 animals, according to the AP.

The government successfully lifted the protected status from wolves in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana in 2011. Each state controls the resilient animal through trophy hunts to limit the predator’s spread and contact with people and livestock.

Many wolves are killed because they are a danger to people or animals. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recorded 81 wolves taken, meaning killed, in 2018. Nearly half of that number, 37, were killed in “predator areas” where each animal is considered dangerous and can be killed without a license, a Wyoming Game and Fish Department spokeswoman told TheDCNF.

Farmers and ranchers have complained about the spread of wolves for years, saying the predators are responsible for killing off livestock and threatening people living in rural areas.

The federal government spends millions to enforce gray wolf protections and fund conservation programs. In 2007, gray wolf conservation cost taxpayers $4.3 million, Scientific American reported.

Sign-Ups Underway For Conejo and Simi YMCAs’ Free “Safety Around Water” Program

Thousand Oaks, Calif.—The Conejo Valley YMCA and Simi Valley Family YMCA are signing up kids for “Safety Around Water” (SAW). The one-week program will be held at both YMCA branches March 25 through March 29. SAW is designed to teach children water safety and basic swimming skills. It is offered at no cost to participants and is open to the public.

The 30-minute classes are for those with little or no swimming experience. Participants are grouped by age: preschool (3 to 5 year olds) and youth (6 to 10 year olds). Classes take place in the morning, afternoon and early evening at the Simi Y and in the afternoon and early evening at the Conejo Y. On Friday, March 29, SAW families are invited to swim from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Simi Y. YMCA lifeguards will be on duty.

According to the USA Swimming Foundation, from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2018, at least 148 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas. “Safety Around Water is a great starting point to not only get kids comfortable in the water, but also teach their parents the importance of developing water safety skills,” says Ricardo Espinoza Carrillo, the Conejo Y’s senior program director.

SAW does not take the place of swim classes. It is a water survival program. During SAW classes, children learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations including how to float on their backs, reach the water’s surface if they become submerged and safely reach a pool’s edge. Fun activities are incorporated in the classes to reinforce skills.

Classes are held in the heated, indoor pools at the Conejo Y (4031 Moorpark Road, Thousand Oaks) and Simi Y (3200 Cochran St., Simi Valley). Participants can register by calling one of the YMCA branches: Conejo Y, 805-523-7613, Simi Y, 805-583-5338 or sign up in person.

Todd Road Jail Breaks Ground for Expansion

    4

    .

    By Tim Pompey

    Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub

It might have been a rainy morning at the Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula, but spirits among the gathered crowd were high as the County initiated a ground-breaking ceremony for what Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub termed a “health and programming unit” (HPU) to be opened May 2021.

The Todd Road Jail, operated by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, currently houses about 800 inmates on 157 acres of agricultural land along Todd Road and Highway 126. It primarily houses convicted male defendants who have been ordered to serve county jail sentences.

In addition to a jail, it has served as a booking station, a place to post bail, to appear for their arraignment, or to appear for trial.

Todd Road also houses female inmates, as well as violent/assaultive offenders, and inmates requiring psychiatric and/or medical services.

The latter group is the focus of the new jail expansion.

“The idea of the HPU was first discussed and recognized more than ten years ago,” said Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub. “Since that time, changes in incarceration criteria in the state of California’s justice system have impacted our county’s jail system population.”

The impact has extended inmates length of stays, created an aging inmate population, and increased the need for medical and mental health services. The new jail unit will play a significant role in improving services to these specific jail populations.

“The addition of 64 beds to our county’s jail system constitutes a modest 4 percent increase in total inmate housing capacity,” said Ayub. “However, the type of care we will be able to provide in this facility equates to a massive increase in our capability to care for the pervasive problem of acute medical and mental illness amongst our inmate population.”

The Sheriff outlined the urgent needs that they deal with as part of their daily oversight.

    Ventura County CEO Mike Powers

“We house people who many times are at the end of their rope, socially, physically and often times mentally,” he explained. “Addressing the issues of mental illness and medical instability in a new and comprehensive way will go a long way toward improving outcomes for those who need it most, and that is exactly what the Health and Programming Unit will allow us to do.”

County CEO Mike Powers commended the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for making the decisions necessary to initiate this project. He noted how most county sheriffs took this type of funding and simply decided to build bigger jails. However, In Ventura County, a different choice was made.

“This Sheriff’s Office is one of the very few in the state who decided that that’s not what we need the most,” Powers stated. “What we need most is a facility that houses an aging population and people with mental illness. We’re not just going to build a bigger jail. We’re going to build a facility that focuses on medical and mental health needs, and we’re going to design it right.”

Powers also insisted that the new facility reflects the “quality of the safety officers who work in these facilities, because they are top notch.”

The project was financed primarily by a state grant in 2016, estimated at about $54 million dollars. The county pitched in the additional $6 million to complete the project.

The new facility will be 64,000 square feet with six distinct housing units each containing ten beds, and four additional beds in the medical clinic. The plan includes day rooms, recreation yards, counseling rooms, multipurpose rooms, classrooms, and visual access to planted landscaping and natural light.

The ground breaking ceremony included (left center) County CEO Mike Powers, County Supervisor Linda Parks, and Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub

California Abortion Providers Brace For Financial Blow, Consider Options As Trump Administration’s Title X Regulations Loom

    .

By Stephen Frank,  California Political News and Views

Terrible news for the Hollywood Left, the rich liberals that use Planned Parenthood for eugenics purposes and the Washington politicians that believe abortion is the way to electoral victory.

Proposed changes to Title X, the federal program that governs funding for family-planning providers, could hurt Planned Parenthood and hundreds of clinics that offer abortion services throughout the state.

Abortion opponents say it’s a necessary move, but advocates are concerned safety-net clinics will close their doors, depriving low-income women of vital services.

The state of California and Essential Access Health, the nonprofit that distributes Title X funds, plan to file two separate lawsuits fighting the changes, which will be published Monday. Some groups are working with the state to find ways to make up for the anticipated loss in federal funds.

Why should Iowa farmers pay for Los Angeles kids to abort babies?  Let the Left privately finance them.  Isn’t it time to stop Federal taxpayers from financing the death of over 500,000 babies a year?  If Guv Newsom wants an abortion for his girl friend or wife (he used to have both) then let him pay for it.  What do you think?

DNC Won’t Allow Fox News To Host Any Democratic Presidential Debates

Amber Athey | White House Correspondent

The Democratic National Committee announced Wednesday that they are not allowing Fox News to host any Democratic presidential debates this election cycle, citing the network’s alleged “inappropriate relationship” with President Donald Trump.

DNC Chair Tom Perez released a statement indicating that he wants the Democratic message to reach as many voters as possible, but also claiming that Fox is “not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate.”

“I believe that a key pathway to victory is to continue to expand our electorate and reach all voters. That is why I have made it a priority to talk to a broad array of potential media partners, including Fox News. Recent reporting in the New Yorker on the inappropriate relationship between President Trump, his administration and Fox News has led me to conclude that the network is not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates. Therefore, Fox News will not serve as a media partner for the 2020 Democratic primary debates.”

Perez’s decision is based on reporting in the New Yorker that alleges Fox News has become a propaganda outlet for the Trump administration and no longer operates as a news outlet. (RELATED: NYT Reporter Says Fox News ‘Is Not A News Network)

The Democrats will host their first primary debate on NBC in June and their second on CNN in July, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter.

Fox News Senior Vice President Bill Sammon slammed the DNC’s decision in response, stating, “We hope the DNC will reconsider its decision to bar Chris Wallace, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, all of whom embody the ultimate journalistic integrity and professionalism, from moderating a Democratic presidential debate.”

“They’re the best debate team in the business and they offer candidates an important opportunity to make their case to the largest TV news audience in America, which includes many persuadable voters,” Sammon added.

Fox White House Correspondent John Roberts noted that the network hosted a presidential debate during the general election in 2016.

Garrett Haake, an MSNBC correspondent, also criticized the decision.

“Not sure how declining to have a debate on Fox News squares with @TomPerez oft-repeated adage about Dems needing to take their message absolutely everywhere & to everyone,” Haake argued.

A number of Fox News anchors and other media professionals similarly called out Perez and painted the decision to bar Fox from hosting debates as short-sighted and unfair.

    https://twitter.com/dmartosko/status/1103372908288770049?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1103372908288770049&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F03%2F06%2Fdnc-tom-perez-fox-news-debates%2F

As The Hill’s Joe Concha points out, Fox News is routinely the highest-rated news network on cable, meaning the lack of debate on the network severely limits the visibility of 2020 Democratic candidates.

Here’s Why What’s Happening On The Border Is Unprecedented, According To Top Officials

Saagar Enjeti | White House Correspondent

Illegal arrivals at the U.S. southern border are at a 10-year high with no sign of abatement, current and former officials tell The Daily Caller. U.S. authorities are warning that the situation is completely unprecedented and nearing a full blown crisis.

President Donald Trump responded to the developing situation by declaring a national emergency at the border in mid-February in order to use military funds and begin construction on a border wall. Critics of the Trump administration say the White House is manufacturing a crisis in order to fulfill a signature campaign promise.

These critics are quick to point to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, which shows that the total number of border apprehensions has more than halved since a peak in the mid-2000s. U.S. authorities, former officials, and representatives for those at the border tell the Caller that these numbers do not tell the full extent of the story.

    https://twitter.com/zerohash/status/1082396891726237696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1082396891726237696&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F03%2F06%2Fwhats-happening-border-illegal-immigrant-arrivals%2F

“What’s different about the current migrant flow — and this is important — is not just how many people are coming but who is arriving.  Historically, illegal aliens crossing into the United States were predominantly single adult males from Mexico with no legal right to stay here, and who we could quickly detain and remove within 48 hours,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testified Wednesday before Congress. (RELATED: Another Democratic Governor Is Pulling National Guard Troops From The Border)

National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd explained to the Caller, “the vast majority of the people crossing the border illegally 10 to 20 years ago were from Mexico, and were repatriated almost immediately upon crossing the border illegally.”

Former Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan echoed Nielsen and Judd’s explanation to the Caller, noting that in the mid-2000s it was extremely simple to deport a detained would-be illegal immigrant.

“I caught the same guy 3 or 4 times in a shift,” he exclaimed, noting that agreements with Mexico made repatriation simple for single males from Mexico.

“Now you’ve got these family members from Central America, they’re children,” he continued, adding “they can’t be returned.”

Homan added that further complicating the system is the asylum process, with families requesting the legal status in en masse.

“Only one in ten are ultimately granted asylum by an immigration judge. Unfortunately, when it comes time to remove the other 90 percent, they have often disappeared into the interior of our country,” Nielsen said of the families.

Judd also remarked that “today, we deal more with Central Americans who violate our Immigration Laws and claim asylum.  Instead of being repatriated, they’re released into the United States pending a future court date.”

Judd, Homan, and Nielsen warned that Mexican drug cartels are profiting off the business of human smuggling and taking advantage of the border crisis to move their product. Homan noted that the cartels virtual control of nearly the entire U.S.-Mexico border enabled them to strategically tie up border patrol assets so they can flood a particular zone with drugs.

Judd noted, “different eras, different problems, but the one common is that the border is not secure, and there doesn’t seem to be the political will in Congress to address this age-old issue.”
