Here’s Why Trump’s Talks With Kim Jong Un Fell Apart

    0

Saagar Enjeti | White House Correspondent

President Donald Trump abruptly ended his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un two hours early over disagreements on denuclearization in Hanoi Thursday.

The summit’s abrupt end marks a disappointing conclusion to what Trump hoped would be a signature achievement and contribution to his foreign policy legacy. White House officials said before the beginning of the summit that the overarching goal of the summit was to agree upon a common definition of denuclearization.

At Trump’s first June 2018 summit with the North Korean leader, the two countries signed a memorandum agreeing in principle to begin a denuclearization process.

The previous summit’s main achievement was securing a cooling period in tensions between the United States and North Korea, which ratcheted up early in Trump’s presidential term, but the president wanted to build upon good relations and establish concrete actions the North Koreans must take. (RELATED: Here’s What Trump, Kim Jong Un Agreed Upon At Summit)

The concrete nature of the discussion appears to be the fault lines on which the talks broke up.

“Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to de-nuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that,” Trump explained in a press conference after the summit, adding, “Sometimes you have to walk.”

The White House released an official more sanitized proclamation to this effect early Thursday, saying, “The two leaders discussed various ways to advance denuclearization and economic driven concepts. No agreement was reached at this time, but their respective teams look forward to meeting in the future.”

Trump’s relentless pitch to the North Koreans was that if they agreed to concrete denuclearization, they would have harsh economic sanctions lifted off them. South Korea, Japan and the United States have emphasized to Kim Jong Un that their strategic location on the Korean peninsula could make them a key trade hub and that advanced Asian economies can provide economic assistance.

The pitch does not appear to have held the allure they hoped.

North Korea’s nuclear program, however, is central to its identity and security as a state. The North Korean leadership views its nuclear arsenal as a guarantor of its security and the way it will be able to preserve its hermit kingdom, which is all but shunned from the global community of the nations.

Kim Jong Un will now begin his two-day train journey back to North Korea where his government is expected to release statements in the near future that clarifies its future actions. Trump meanwhile is headed back to Washington, D.C., where he is scheduled to appear at the Conservative Political Action Committee on Saturday.

On 2/7/19, at about 3:52 PM, Simi Valley Police officers responded to a felony Hit and Run investigation involving a vehicle vs. pedestrian in the area of Madera Rd. and Easy St. The pedestrian had only minor injuries, but the driver failed to render aid and fled the scene. The investigation yielded no witnesses who could identify the driver, but a video from a near by business showed that the suspect vehicle was a Dodge Dart, dark in color. Thanks to the help of social media, the video made it to the local news. On 2/27/19, footage of the incident was aired on the evening news and the suspect from the Hit and Run was watching. He recognized his vehicle and decided to turn himself in to the Simi Valley Police Dept. He was identified as Fermin Martin, 10/24/91 of Simi Valley. Martin was interviewed and subsequently placed under arrest for Felony Hit and Run.

Social media is a very valuable communication tool for the Simi Valley Police Department. Through our networks we are able to spread knowledge to protect the community, help catch suspects, request assistance in cases and share the efforts of our department. More Women Donning Hard Hats as a Career: ‘Times Are Changing’

    0

More women in New York City are donning hard hats as a career and one such individual talked about how much she enjoys it.

“Times are changing. It’s not just a man’s world anymore,” Tanay Matthews, who works construction with Local 361 union, told CBS2 on Wednesday. (RELATED: Kate Hudson Will Raise Her Daughter ‘Genderless’: We Don’t Know ‘What She’s Going To Identify As’)

“I love it, honestly. It’s tough, it’s physically draining, but every day I wake up and I give it my all,” she added, before explaining that on a typical day she’s the only woman on site. (RELATED: Amy Schumer Doesn’t Care What Her Baby’s ‘Gender Is’ And Any Way The Baby Identifies Is Cool With Us’)

“I work with about 30 men now,” Matthews continued. “My last job might have been 200.”

Women currently make up just about four percent of the construction union forces, according to the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York City.

“Work needs to be done to continue to get the word out to women and young girls that yes, you can do this, this is a career for you,” Kathleen Culhane, president of Non-Traditional Employment for Women (NEW) shared.

Her organization offers a two-month pre-apprenticeship for women interested in learning construction skills. Since 2005, 10 percent of apprenticeships were set aside for NEW grads and that number is going up.

“We’ve just increased that, set aside by 50 percent,” Culhane added. “Really amazing for the women of New York City.”

“It’s booming now. I’m so confident now that I’m going to be great, my family is going to be great,” Shanique Latimes, who’s finishing up her training, explained. “As a female, we can do it!”

“My last job I worked at the World Trade Center and I’ve seen all these women – construction women – walking back and forth and they have like this pride on their face, and I wanted that for myself,” Tshura Williams shared

And it’s not just in New York City, but across the country, according to the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC).

Women currently make up only 9.1 percent of the industry, but that number expected to increase by 25 percent in just the next year.
