POLITICS | Kiyomi Kowalski Shares View on Relearning Education with Equality in our Schools

    Building the Future Together

    KIYOMI KOWALSKI SEEKS TO SERVE

HER COMMUNITY ON THE LVUSD SCHOOL BOARD

Kiyomi Kowalski is a mom and a Marine with a law degree on a lifelong mission to bring communities together and fight for education, families and social justice. As part of that mission, she is now running in the November 3rd election for a seat on the board of the Las Virgenes Unified School District, where she will work in these unprecedented times with students, families, teachers, and administrators to build the future together – a future in which there will be equality and opportunity for all.

“I will work closely with fellow board members, parents, teachers and administrators to ensure that every child feels seen and valued on all LVUSD campuses,” says Kowalski. “When we all work together, we can make sure there is equity in opportunities and that each student is able to see themselves within our curriculum.”

The West Hills mother of two knows whereof she speaks.

Building communities through active engagement, Kowalski volunteers as a LVUSD Curriculum Councilmember, Secretary of the AE Wright Middle School Parent Faculty Club, Staff and Board member at the LAW Project of Los Angeles providing legal advocacy to families within the juvenile justice system, and a Community Organizer on the Board of Jewish Education at Valley Outreach Synagogue where she Chairs their Anti-Racism Task Force. She has also graduated from two national candidate training programs, New Politics Leadership and Emerge California, and worked on the LVUSD Measure V Bond Committee and AEW School-site Council.

Kowalski’s platform of equality and opportunity focuses on relearning education, community inclusion and fiscal responsibility.

A self-proclaimed social justice warrior she sees these extraordinary times as an opportunity to reimagine a student curriculum that creates global citizens who can empathize with, learn from, and understand people with multiple perspectives and backgrounds. “Leading by example, we can ensure our teachers, administrators and staff receive regular training in cultural competency and various forms of systemic bias. We must retool our studies to expand awareness of marginalized groups beyond the history and perspectives of the majority. By cleverly leveraging community partnerships and fiscal creativity, we can ensure that all students feel seen and valued on our campuses.”

Kowalski adds that, “Like many, I feel so fortunate to raise my family in an area known for its quality schools. I’m ready to build upon that legacy. My life’s journey is about embracing a larger community as my own, bringing together different perspectives and making sure that diversity and fairness are inherent with every opportunity.”

    What Her Peers Are Saying:

Angela Cutbill, Vice President of LVUSD School Board

“Kiyomi already has a big picture perspective with a voice of equality, cultural sensitivity and inclusion for the greater strides our district needs in those areas. She will bring a jolt of energy that will really be welcomed on the board.”

Dallas Lawrence, Clerk of LVUSD School Board

“Kiyomi is a mom, Marine and Juris Doctor. I couldn’t think of a better time to have all three on the school board. As a mom with kids in the district she has skin in the game. As a Marine, she knows what it means to be a leader. As a lawyer she speaks to the importance of policy and rules that matter.”

Deborah Klein Lopez, Agoura Hills City Council Member

“She’s the right candidate for the right time. A mom who leads by example and a former Marine here to serve.”

Mathy Wasserman, LVUSD Board of Education

“When I made the hard decision not to run again for the Las Virgenes school board I knew it would be okay, because I knew Kiyomi would. We share values that are important to this community and ones that ensure students have every option and opportunity to succeed. She brings an educated insight, a passion to improve, and a commitment to work together to raise all students to great heights.”

Linda Northrup, Agoura Hills City Council Member

“Having a good relationship between our cities and school district is important for our students’ education. Kiyomi Kowalski has earned incredible support from each of our local cities due to her smarts, her experience, her dedication and her leadership qualities. I know Kiyomi will be a great LVUSD school board member.”
