KIYOMI KOWALSKI SEEKS TO SERVE
HER COMMUNITY ON THE LVUSD SCHOOL BOARD
Kiyomi Kowalski is a mom and a Marine with a law degree on a lifelong mission to bring communities together and fight for education, families and social justice. As part of that mission, she is now running in the November 3rd election for a seat on the board of the Las Virgenes Unified School District, where she will work in these unprecedented times with students, families, teachers, and administrators to build the future together – a future in which there will be equality and opportunity for all.
“I will work closely with fellow board members, parents, teachers and administrators to ensure that every child feels seen and valued on all LVUSD campuses,” says Kowalski. “When we all work together, we can make sure there is equity in opportunities and that each student is able to see themselves within our curriculum.”
The West Hills mother of two knows whereof she speaks.
Building communities through active engagement, Kowalski volunteers as a LVUSD Curriculum Councilmember, Secretary of the AE Wright Middle School Parent Faculty Club, Staff and Board member at the LAW Project of Los Angeles providing legal advocacy to families within the juvenile justice system, and a Community Organizer on the Board of Jewish Education at Valley Outreach Synagogue where she Chairs their Anti-Racism Task Force. She has also graduated from two national candidate training programs, New Politics Leadership and Emerge California, and worked on the LVUSD Measure V Bond Committee and AEW School-site Council.
Kowalski’s platform of equality and opportunity focuses on relearning education, community inclusion and fiscal responsibility.
A self-proclaimed social justice warrior she sees these extraordinary times as an opportunity to reimagine a student curriculum that creates global citizens who can empathize with, learn from, and understand people with multiple perspectives and backgrounds. “Leading by example, we can ensure our teachers, administrators and staff receive regular training in cultural competency and various forms of systemic bias. We must retool our studies to expand awareness of marginalized groups beyond the history and perspectives of the majority. By cleverly leveraging community partnerships and fiscal creativity, we can ensure that all students feel seen and valued on our campuses.”
Kowalski adds that, “Like many, I feel so fortunate to raise my family in an area known for its quality schools. I’m ready to build upon that legacy. My life’s journey is about embracing a larger community as my own, bringing together different perspectives and making sure that diversity and fairness are inherent with every opportunity.”
