Smith refuses to oppose similar jobs-killing legislation at federal level, hundreds of thousands of CA jobs remain in jeopardy
Valencia, CA – Following repeated calls from Congressman Mike Garcia to oppose the expansion of her signature legislation AB5 to the national level, liberal politician Christy Smith remains silent. This comes as her law threatens to force Uber and Lyft out of California, crushing hundreds of thousands of jobs amidst a pandemic that has already put millions of Californians out of work. “Liberal Christy Smith lied to her constituents, and now she refuses to oppose the spread of her disastrous law to the national level. Californians are hurting and many are turning to gig economy jobs to survive these difficult times,” said Garcia. “Smith and her liberal Sacramento pals are only making a bad situation worse for our workers and small businesses who are searching for a lifeline.” Uber and Lyft have decreased drunk driving and provided critical transportation for seniors, but these services are now on the brink of shutdown. Liberal Smith has joined her Sacramento colleagues in repeatedly refusing to support repeal efforts and even voted for a budget that included $20 million to go after struggling workers and small businesses. Reports indicate that the hundreds of thousands of Uber and Lyft jobs will not be the last to go. The food and grocery delivery services that have become critical for many older Americans and struggling restaurants during the pandemic may be next on the chopping block for Sacramento liberals. “We’ve already seen what Smith’s signature legislation has done to our state. It is clear that we cannot allow these destructive policies to spread to Washington,” Garcia added. “That’s why I am proud to co-sponsor a bill that will protect American workers and preempt laws like AB5 at the federal level.”
