POLITICS | Race for the 25th – Garcia makes donation of salary to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry

Santa Clarita, CA – Congressman Mike Garcia (R, CA-25) today presented his personal monthly donation from his September salary to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry, a Newhall non-profit that works to alleviate hunger in the SCV by providing food to those in need of assistance, especially seniors and working families.

“As we continue our fight against the coronavirus, we cannot forget the folks who are hurting most right now,” said Garcia. “Many of our friends and neighbors have lost their jobs and their livelihoods in the last seven months, and local non-profits like the SCV Food Pantry play a critical role in making sure every member of our community is able to make it through these tough times. I am proud to support the Food Pantry because I know the work they do makes a big impact on peoples’ lives, especially during a crisis like the one we face today.”

“The SCV Food Pantry is grateful for Congressman Garcia’s generous personal contribution. It’s community support like his that makes possible our important work, especially during this challenging time,” said SCV Food Pantry Board of Directors President Patrick Mullen. “Our largest source of donations, the Mail Carrier’s Food Drive, which provides several months’ worth of food was not held this year due to the pandemic, so the Congressman’s donation will be used to purchase food to help make up the difference.”

Congressman Garcia’s Food Pantry contribution follows last month’s split donation to the Antelope Valley Veterans Community Action Coalition, a nonprofit supporting local veterans with health care and financial assistance, and the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Boosters, an organization that funds purchases of life-saving protective equipment for local deputies.

Garcia will continue to fulfill the commitment he made in June to donate the equivalent of 10% of his monthly salary to local non-profits as the 25th district continues to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

Mike Garcia believes in a strong national defense and is a pro-business, pro-taxpayer, political outsider with nearly 20 years of service to this country as one of the first Super Hornet strike fighter pilots in the Navy and is a highly decorated US Naval Officer.  Garcia is a first-generation American whose father immigrated to the US in 1959 and has lived in the 25th district for nearly all of his life.  Garcia lives in Santa Clarita with his wife and two sons. He was elected to Congress on May 12, 2020, winning a Special Election with 55% and becoming the first California Republican to flip a Democrat seat since 1998.

The 25th district encompasses the cities of Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster and the northern part of the San Fernando Valley.  The median income is $76,866 and the ethnic breakdown is 45.8% White, 8% Black, 7.7% Asian and 35.3% Hispanic.
