POLITICS | Sonia Kim – Port Hueneme City Council Campaign Announcement

    Hello Hueneme Residents,
    .
My name is Sonia Kim, and I am running for Port Hueneme City Council. I am an honest and hardworking first-generation American and proud daughter of Mexican immigrants. I am also a former small business owner with strong ties to the community, and the success of our city is very personal to me.
    .
I moved here almost 20 years ago with my late husband, Peter, to take over our family-owned dry-cleaning business, Beachport Cleaners. It was here that I raised my three children, made lifelong friends, and built great partnerships throughout our community. My three children graduated from Hueneme Elementary, E.O. Green Jr. High, and Hueneme High School. My eldest went on to become a registered nurse, my middle, a Naval Officer, and my youngest enlisted in the Army. My boyfriend’s children, whom we are raising together, currently attend Hueneme Elementary. They are one of many reasons that the safety and success of our community is so important to me.
    .
While running our small business, we made many personal connections with our customers. We excelled through effective networking, reducing our carbon footprint, and providing outstanding customer service to everyone in our community. Our business was awarded the highly sought-after contracts with Naval Base Ventura County, both Hueneme and Point Mugu. We also did business with Hueneme High School NJROTC, The Paper Mill, BMW, and the ships and workers at the Port of Hueneme. Additionally, we serviced the Port Hueneme Police Department building strong relationships with our Officers on and off the job. Another organization we supported over the past 18 years was the 20th Century Onyx Club which works with young African American women to help build leadership skills, receive scholarships furthering their education, and providing opportunities for community service. My late husband and I donated our time and money to the debutantes not only by sponsoring but also by attending the ball yearly, spending time with the girls and their families, and supporting the organization as a whole.
    .
Once elected, I will work tirelessly to improve our town’s revenue, keeping us out of the red. I will work to partner with the port to build new agreements focused on increasing both our revenues. I will continue to empower our youth and focus on opportunities to keep them involved in local government. I am also dedicated to establishing better beach access for the elderly in our community. Lastly, as a previous small business owner, I understand what it will take for our city’s small businesses to recover and rebuild after the negative impacts to the economy due to the COVID-19 lock down. I believe that with time we will get our businesses back on track and stronger than before. The best is yet to come.
    .
Working together, we can effectively identify problems, pursue new ideas, and build solutions to ensure a brighter future for us all.

I support Sonia Kim for Port Hueneme City Council 2020!

I have known Sonia Kim for at least 15 years. As a Port Hueneme resident for over 20 years, Sonia’s prior business Beach Port Cleaners was my go-to for all of my business attire dry cleaning and tailoring needs. Early on I was impressed with Sonia’s personable, professional and extremely generous nature. Sonia is a very capable person that faces challenges with a “can do” attitude. As a fellow business owner, I quickly recognized Sonia’s strong work ethic and enthusiasm to find ways to do things better and make things better. Sonia is not afraid to work long hours to get the job done and get it done right. I have every confidence that Sonia Kim will work hard to make great things happen for our little gem of a city by the sea. Please vote for Sonia Kim!

    Sonia,
What is you virw on voting on issues in compliance with the opinion of Mrs. Knopps, another council member?
What is your opinion on having the Countu manage our policing of Port Hueneme, and what would the cost savings be?

Sonia Kim and her late husband Peter served the community of Port Hueneme very quietly from the inside of Beach Port Cleaners. They never wanted recognition, but, they always helped those hurting from tragedy from their dry cleaners. Whether it was Larry King or a sailor from Port Hueneme who died in a motorcycle accident, it was Beach Port Cleaners donating hours of work to help the families. In 2011, Oxnard High School Football player Adrian Padilla suffered a brain injury requiring emergency surgery in San Luis Obispo. We organized a $25 for #25 fundraising effort. From the intensive care unit Adrian made it known he did not want to loose track of his jersey! I was able to track down his jersey, but, it had been cut off of him and was in three pieces just barely holding together. When I went to Sonia and Peter for help there was no hesitation. Sonia spent several hours of her time repairing the jersey. She then laundered it and we were able to keep the where about his jersey a secret. At the Oxnard High School homecoming football game Adrian was presented with his jersey and the funds raised to help him. He immediately put on his jersey and was so happy! I see Sonia as a woman of action, compassion and dedication to the community of Port Hueneme. We need community servants willing to take action to make our community better. Sonia is good for our community!
