St. John’s Regional Medical Center Opens Doors to New Emergency Department

Move initiates final phase of Emergency Department construction

Dignity Health’s St. John’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) will open the doors to its new Emergency Department (ED) on Tuesday, August 4. The new ED, which spans more than 6,500 square feet, is part of a larger initiative to modernize and expand SJRMC’s facilities.

Welcoming patients to the innovative new facility will be a seamless process facilitated by the collaboration of physicians, nurses, and staff. Following the move, construction on the previously existing portion of the ED will begin. This project has been made possible by the generous contributions of community members and volunteers.

“This new and improved Emergency Department is just one example of how we are investing in the health of our community,” says Darren Lee, President and CEO of St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital and St. John’s Regional Medical Center. “We are eager to share our expansion with the community, and look forward to the future of St. John’s Hospitals.”

While SJRMC has always provided the community with board certified Emergency Physicians, skilled nurses and an exceptional team, the staff and patients will now benefit from the following amenities:

• An improved patient and ambulance entrance
• A new and sizeable waiting area
• Three essential and private triage rooms
• Centralized nurse’s station with sophisticated monitoring capabilities
• Sizeable private treatment rooms that have been configured to accommodate various medical emergencies

The three triage rooms will allow our care team to bring services, such as blood draws and electrocardiogram checks, to a patient in one sitting, instead of transporting the patient from the lobby back to a dedicated area for each service. Patients will continue to benefit from services like bedside registration to minimize delays and make their visits as pleasant as possible.

Following the move into the new ED, construction on the original ED area will begin. In addition to the amenities listed above, the integrated ED at SJRMC will also boast the following when complete:

• A total of four negative pressure isolation rooms
• A total of 31 exam rooms (including one bariatric room and two psychiatric safe rooms)
• An in-department x-ray suite
• Three refreshed resuscitation bays

These enhancements at SJRMC are part of Dignity Health’s commitment to improve the health of the communities we serve. SJRMC has joined St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital in Arroyo Grande, and French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, in this effort.
