A large commercial occupancy on the 6000 block of Ventura Blvd, off Sherwin Avenue, broke into flames at 3:04 in the afternoon. Multiple calls received from Ventura County Fire Dispatch center reported people were trapped inside the structure in the Montalvo district. Oxnard Fire units arrived first on scene and identified the source of the fire in a large commercial dust receptacle that was used as a catchment for wood processing. The elevated large metal housing (10X10X10) was exterior of the business, however significant smoke filled the structure. Fire personnel coordinated a fire attack on the unit while additional resources assisted in evacuating the business and performed a systematic search to confirm no one was trapped inside. Forced ventilation was performed by the ladder truck company and this was assisted with a fixed ventilation system that was part of the facility.
One civilian was injured and was treated and transported by AMR to a local hospital.
The initial knockdown of the fire was completed within 18 minutes. The main occupancy was spared of further damage. After the occupancy was completely ventilated, the business operation was able to continue at a limited capacity. Ventura Building and safety was notified of the fire and will following up with business owners on Tuesday.
The cause of the fire remined unknown. There was no evidence of arson or negligent behavior. Estimated damages to the business will later be determined due to the unique characteristics of the facility and the equipment involved. The unit involved in the fire will be evaluated by business personnel.
