Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release
Two men were arrested for firearms-related charges after a shooting occurred in the unincorporated area of Ojai known as Meiners Oaks on April 16, 2021.
On April 16, 2021, deputies were dispatched to a shooting that occurred in the 100-block of El Roblar Drive. They checked the area and determined all involved parties had left. Deputies searched the area and found several items of evidence indicating a firearm had been discharged. There was no evidence anyone had been struck by the gunfire. Investigators obtained video surveillance footage that helped them identify both the victim and the suspect involved in the shooting. The video footage also showed the victim removed a firearm from his waistband and pointed it toward the suspect, but never fired it.
On April 22, 2021, the victim, Arturo Jacobo, was a passenger in a vehicle driving near Ojai. Deputies stopped the vehicle and detained Jacobo. They searched the vehicle and found an unregistered and non-serialized firearm, commonly referred to as a “Ghost gun,” since it cannot be registered through the Department of Justice. A search warrant was obtained and served at Jacobo’s residence. Investigators located additional ammunition inside his bedroom. Jacobo was arrested for carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm. He was released on bail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 8, 2021.
On May 15, 2021, deputies stopped a vehicle near Ojai and recognized the passenger as the primary suspect in the shooting, Ethan Kelly. Deputies searched the vehicle and located a handgun, which was the same caliber firearm used in the shooting. The serial number on the firearm had been removed using an unknown substance. Kelly was arrested for assault with a semi-automatic firearm and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Kelly’s case was submitted and filed with the District Attorney’s Office. Kelly is currently in custody with his bail set at $140,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 27, 2021.
