The 7th Annual Ventura County Farm Day, set for Saturday, November 9, will start early with a kickoff “Meet The Farmer” Pig Roast. The farm-to-table wine dinner is Thursday, November 7 at Topa Mountain Winery in Ojai. The dinner includes a pig roast, live music, farm-fresh food including locally grown produce, craft cocktails, beers and wines.
Participating Farm Day farmers will talk about their farm’s history, what’ they grow and what it is like to be a farmer in Ventura County. “Agriculture has such a rich history in our county,” says Mary Maranville, founder and CEO of Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG), the nonprofit organization that puts on Farm Day each year. “Farmers don’t often get a chance to share their stories in a public setting. The dinner provides that opportunity.”
SEEAG’s mission is to help young students understand the origins of their food and the importance of local farmland. It brings its message to elementary schools by using its 30-foot-long cargo van—the “Farm Fresh Mobile Classroom”–and arranging free farm field trips to “The Farm Lab” on Saticoy’s Petty Ranch. Since it began in 2008, SEEAG programs have reached over 25,000 elementary school students in Southern California.
The kickoff dinner is for ages 21 and over. It begins at 5:00 p.m. Dinner tickets are $95 per person (early entry VIP tickets that include extra appetizers and wine flights are $150 each).
Ventura County Farm Day sponsors include Ventura County Coast, Farm Credit West, Brokaw Nursery, Al Lowe Construction and Ventura County Agricultural Association.
