Setting Brushfires of Freedom by Don Jans

Ventura County Rescue Mission – ‘It’s been so powerful to learn about him.’

Introducing the new Mission director, Clayton Coates
In Romans 11:34-36 we read, “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?…For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.”
In the front of my first Bible is written, “On September 23, 1982 I became a Christian.” That was the beginning of my journey of living out this passage as I knelt, with my parents by my side, and surrendered my life to Jesus. Several years later, in 1994, I surrendered my vocation to Jesus. I walked down the aisle and made that decision public. The next day, while enrolling at a Bible College, I received my first job as a youth pastor.
Alexia stops cycle, chooses new life with kids
Alexia grew up in Oxnard in what she calls a “picture-perfect home.” But after her father died when she was 16, she started experimenting with drugs: first marijuana and then methamphetamine. She had her son when she was 19, and battled her addiction on and off.
Alexia’s son was taken from her care before he was 2 years old. “I fell asleep, and my son and boyfriend’s son, they opened the door and went outside into the play area at our apartment,” she said. …
Matthew steps out of his spiral, focuses on the Word
Matthew’s experience with church has been complicated. His parents raised him and his sister and brother as Jehovah’s Witnesses, but at 15, Matthew found himself removed from the religion. “I was excommunicated from the church for some premarital activities,” he said. “I immediately fell into drugs and alcohol, and women outside of the church. Things got progressively worse.”
Matthew was an ocean lifeguard, worked as an EMT and was a reserve firefighter at just 19. “But because of my drinking, I got several DUIs and went to jail,” he said. “I lost all those good jobs I had at such a young age.”
