Hueneme Chamber Names 2017 Citizen and Business Person of the Year | Tom Dunn and Tony Suleiman

PORT HUENEME, Calif-– The Hueneme Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 78th anniversary hosting its annual Community Awards Dinner at the Historic Bard Mansion on Friday, March 23, 2018. Top honors will be awarded to the 2017 Citizen of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Chairman’s Award recipients.

Citizen of the Year honors will be presented to Mr. Tom Dunn of Port Hueneme. Mr. Dunn is the definition of community activism. Seeing a need for more ways to keep the community informed and engaged, he started a grass roots movement to share information about the happenings in Port Hueneme in various formats, most notable are the “Hello Port Hueneme” video blog and “Port Hueneme News” Facebook page.

Mr. Tony Suleiman, State Farm Ins Agent, will be honored as the Business Person of the Year. Mr. Suleiman opened his office in Port Hueneme in July of 2016. Tony became an active member of the community from day one, volunteering with local organizations and sponsoring community events. His trademark arm-crossed pose has made him a recognizable face in Port Hueneme.

The 2017 Chairman’s Award will be given by Mr. Christopher Bissonnette, retired U.S. Navy Master Chief, and his wife Christine – or as we call them in Port Hueneme, Mr. & Mrs. Santa Clause. The Bissonnettes have been donating their time and hearts to the annual Hueneme Holly Day Tree Lighting since it was started in 2013. Each year, they sit and smile while hundreds of children take their turn telling Santa & Mrs. Clause how good they have been hoping Santa brings them the gifts they ask for while sitting on his lap.

The Chamber will also recognize several public servants from the community as well as military service members from Naval Base Ventura County: Police Officer of the Year – Officer Henry Montelongo; Military Persons of the Year from NBVC – CM1 Chad Wescott and UT2 Matthew Cohara; NBVC Firefighter of the Year – Engineer Lisa Tarkany; Ventura County Firefighter of the Year – Firefighter David Schacherer; Educator of the Year – Ms. Helen Cosgrove Assistant Superitendent Hueneme Elementary School District; and City of Port Hueneme Employee of the Year- Ms. Jennifer Romero.
